Many aircon service repair visits could go faster and smoother—if customers didn’t unknowingly make things more challenging. While well-meaning, certain widespread practices paradoxically make diagnoses take longer and raise the possibility of miscommunications.

Here’s what technicians in the servicing field wish you’d avoid before they arrive.

    Turning Off the Power Completely

It might seem logical to shut off the circuit breaker before a technician arrives. After all, safety first, right? However, the power supply is often required to run diagnostics for servicing. Technicians need to check how your unit performs under operating conditions. If the system is completely powered down—especially from the main board—it can delay the inspection process, particularly if the breaker is located somewhere inaccessible to the technician.

Instead, leave your aircon in standby mode or keep it running if it’s still semi-operational. Your technician will know how to safely power it down once they arrive.

    Trying to “Fix” Things Yourself

YouTube hacks and DIY aircon repair tricks can do more harm than good. Many technicians report arriving to find that clients have already dismantled panels, removed filters incorrectly, or poked around the electrical boards. Not only is this unsafe, but it also makes the job harder. Parts may be reinstalled incorrectly or components might already be damaged before the inspection even begins.

Technicians are trained to work methodically and safely. Tampering with your unit beforehand risks voiding warranties and complicating repairs.

Cleaning the Unit Right Before the Visit

It’s natural to want to tidy up before someone visits your home. However, cleaning the aircon unit—especially the filters or coils—right before an aircon servicing appointment can skew what the technician sees. A freshly cleaned filter may hide the fact that you’re not cleaning it frequently enough. Dust-free vents might suggest a unit is performing well when it isn’t.

Let the technician see your aircon in its usual state. That gives them a more accurate picture of usage habits and maintenance frequency, which helps with better diagnostics and long-term care advice.

Forgetting to Clear the Space Around the Unit

Clutter around the aircon unit—whether it’s boxes, curtains, or heavy furniture—slows down the job significantly. Technicians need space to access both the indoor and outdoor units safely. It adds to the time and risk involved if they’re constantly shifting items or navigating tight spots.

Before your scheduled aircon servicing, ensure there’s a clear metre of working space around the indoor and condenser units. It also signals respect for the technician’s time and reduces potential damage to your property.

Not Explaining the Full Problem Upfront

“Can you check why the unit isn’t cooling?” is a vague request. Technicians appreciate more context—when the issue started, any odd sounds, smells, or whether the unit turns on but doesn’t blow cold air. The more details you can provide, the quicker they can identify the issue. Mention if you’ve noticed any water leakage, if it only happens at night, or if it’s inconsistent across rooms.

Be detailed in your description when booking your aircon repair. It shortens troubleshooting time and ensures the technician brings the right tools and replacement parts.

Leaving Pets Loose in the Area

Pets are part of the family, but they can be a safety hazard during technical work. Curious cats or energetic dogs can disrupt the process or get injured near tools and exposed units. Technicians appreciate it when pets are kept in a separate room until the job is done.

This approach isn’t just for safety—it also allows technicians to focus entirely on diagnosing and repairing without distraction or worry.

    Conclusion

Aircon technicians aren’t just fixing your cooling system—they’re trying to do it efficiently, safely, and accurately. Avoiding these typical pre-visit errors will facilitate the procedure for both parties. Remember, a little planning goes a long way to ensure your aircon servicing is efficient and stress-free.
